My name is Kate West. This is my 9th year teaching at Saint Agnes. In addition to
fourth grade, I have also taught 3rd grade and junior high Language Arts. I love
teaching fourth grade because it is a big transition for the students. I enjoy teaching
students how to manage the increased expectations of the upper grades, so we work on
organization and time management. I want to help them set the foundation to be
successful in the future.
In fourth grade, we are a family! From the very beginning of the year, I work to establish
a classroom culture of caring and respect. I want my students to feel like they are an
important part of our classroom. I greet my students with a smile each morning. Each
student has a job that helps our classroom. We meet each morning to discuss social-
emotional topics, play cooperative games, and stay updated on each other's lives. It is
important to me that my students learn to value each other and themselves.
Academically, I want my students to find learning enjoyable. I make sure my classroom
has a variety of learning activities. Students might work independently, with partners, or
in small groups. Some activities involve games and a lot of noise, while others involve
relaxing music and quiet work. I understand that each child needs something different
to be successful, so I try to provide as many different opportunities as possible.
